Endodontic treatment commonly referred to as root canal treatment , treats the inside of the tooth. This is necessary when the pulp becomes inflamed or infected, as a result of deep decay, repeated dental procedures on the tooth, faulty crowns, or a crack or chip in the tooth. In addition, trauma to a tooth may cause pulp damage even if the tooth has no visible chips or cracks. If pulp inflammation or infection is left untreated, it can cause pain or lead to an abscess.

What are typical symptoms of root canal infection?

Depending on the cause, symptoms can be numerous and varied:
• Sharp, acute and intense pain, which is difficult to pinpoint
• Sharp pain when biting down on your tooth or on food
• Lingering pain after eating hot or cold foods
• Dull ache and pressure
• Tenderness (accompanied by swelling) in the nearby gums
• occasionally root canal infection is picked up on a routine xray, with no symptoms in the tooth

How does endodontic treatment save the tooth?

During root canal treatment, the inflamed or infected pulp is removed and the inside of the tooth is carefully cleaned and disinfected, then filled and sealed with a rubber-like material called gutta-percha. The tooth is then restored either with a filling or with a crown if it needs more protection. This allows the tooth to continue to function like any other tooth.

Is root canal treatment possible in childrens teeth?

Yes it is, but the techniques and materials used for sealing the roots are different, because baby teeth get resorbed as the secondary teeth push through.
